It May Truly Be Spring

Missouri weather is unpredictable.  I don’t find that charming or amusing anymore, just a huge pain in the ass.  Trying to plan gardens, events or trips is bound to be disastrous in April.  Sometimes, just to piss me off, it will even snow.

I am hesitant to say that all of that nonsense is behind us this year, but the ten day forecast, which scoots us in right into May, which is a month that a person can almost rely upon, is predicting nothing but warm weather and almost no violent storms.

Last night we took full advantage of the season.  We mowed the lawn, admired the one open blossom on my lilac bush, grilled brats and corn on the cob and wrung our hands over the tiny plants that we hope will become our garden.  They looked so big in the peat pots indoors, but so tiny and defenseless outside.

Well, the green beans don’t look defenseless, they look like they’re about to serve up our dinner.  They vine is already over a foot tall and has several blossoms.  We will have our first couple of beans before the tomato plants have had a chance to decide to live or die.  Once they commit to living, they are indestructible, but we aren’t there yet.
