In spite of all of the crazy in Missouri that makes its way into the news, I love Columbia. It is a bigger city than the tiny township I grew up in without being a City like Austin with its big city traffic and dirt. Yesterday at lunch I was reminded why I like it here.
I managed to leave the house without my wallet, but I still had my checkbook floating around in my purse. I walked to my favorite used book store, picked out a couple of titles and took them to the counter. The owner was surprised when I said that I was going to pay with a check and we had a short conversation about how rare they are becoming. I then made some remark about hoping I could find a place to eat lunch that would be check-friendly. Most of the downtown businesses have stopped taking them. Without hesitation, he told me to tack fifteen dollars onto my total for cash and to enjoy my lunch.
So, armed with my dollars, I walked another couple of blocks to grab some food and spent the remainder of the hour sitting on one of the many shaded benches available reading one of my new books. The weather was perfect and the only pestering I had to put up with was a leashed dog that sniffed my ankles, which I didn’t mind at all.
